An Indiana Motor Vehicle Bill of Sale form is proof of a sale or transfer of a vehicle between the seller and buyer. This form is used for registering the vehicle with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).

  Indiana Vehicle Registration

  All Indiana vehicles must be registered within 45 days after purchase or transfer. You have 60 days to register your vehicle if you just moved to Indiana. Registrations must be renewed every year. The date of registration expiration depends on your last name.

  Where to Register Your Vehicle

  Most vehicle registrations and registration renewals can be done online. Even new vehicle registrations can be done online if it’s been 45 days or less since purchasing the vehicle and submitting the title to the BMV. You must register the vehicle at a BMV branch office if more days have passed.

  Documents Required by the BMV Office

  The following documents are required to register your vehicle with the Indiana BMV:

  • Application For Certificate Of Title For A Vehicle (State Form 205)
  • Bill of Sale (State Form 44237)
  • Certificate of title
  • Indiana driver’s license
  • Odometer Disclosure Statement (State Form 43230)
  • Proof of insurance
  • Registration fees
  • Physical Inspection of a Vehicle or Watercraft (State Form 39530) — This is a requirement for out-of-state vehicles when the vehicle is not brought to the BMV office or the VIN is not accessible.

  If someone else is representing you during the registration process, you need to bring a power of attorney form.

  Note that Lake County and Porter County require an emissions test.

  You’ll also need a vehicle power of attorney form if someone else buys the vehicle on your behalf.
